Waterlow & Sons
Established 1810 by James Waterlow By 1844, the four sons
(Alfred, Walter, Sir Sydney and Albert) joined the company, which
converted to a limited company in 1876, reconstituted in 1879 and
1897. Between 1877 and 1920, Waterlow Bros. & Layton was a separate
company run by some of the sons. In 1932, a judgment by the House of
Lords for the firm to pay the Bank of Portugal 600,000+ pounds
nearly bankrupted the firm. Acquired by De La Rue & Co. Ltd. 1960.
